2024 FAMILY LAW SECTION LEADERSHIP CLASS

The Family Law Section of the State Bar of Texas is pleased to announce its first FLS Leadership Class. The mission of the FLS Leadership Class is to provide leadership training and mentorship to the future leaders in Texas family law to continue to promote the highest degree of professionalism, education, fellowship, and excellence in the practice of family law.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

  • Two Year Commitment (2024 – 2026). First Year consists of class meetings and events. Second Year the Class will lead and complete a Class project.
  • Each Class Member assigned a mentor for the duration of the class. Class Members and mentors will meet regularly via zoom, phone, and/or in person.
  • Each Class Member will be responsible for accepting four (4) pro bono cases during the 2-year class period.
  • Class Members will participate in Family Law Section meetings and be introduced to other family law organizations.
  • Class Members will have opportunities to learn leadership skills and meet other leaders in our profession.

  • FLS Leadership Class Retreat
    • Location: Boerne, TX
    • Dates: September 27-29, 2024
  • Marriage Dissolution Institute 2025
    • Location: TBA
    • Dates: April 2025 (specific date TBA)
  • Advanced Family Law 2025
    • Location: San Antonio
    • Dates: August 3-7, 2025

*NOTE:  Attendance at the above is mandatory for all Class Members. Class meetings will take place before or during the conferences listed above.

QUALIFIED APPLICANTS WILL:

  • Have a minimum of 3 years of experience in family law.
  • Be 40 years of age or younger OR have been admitted to the Bar for less than 10 years.
  • Be a member of the Family Law Section
  • Commit to attending all mandatory program sessions and participate in Class projects and

  • The FLS Leadership Class Committee will consider and respond in writing to all applications received.
  • Each applicant will be notified whether they have been accepted into the FLS Leadership Class by May 31, 2024.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

  • Class members will be responsible for their own travel and hotel costs for all class meetings (except for the Class Retreat, when the Section will cover hotel costs, but the class member will still be required to pay his/her own travel to and from the Class Retreat). Class members will also be responsible for payment of any required registration fees for CLE courses.
  • Class members will also be responsible for their own food and beverage costs during any class meeting sessions with some special exceptions when the Section may cover a dinner for the class.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION OR NOMINATION

Attach a letter of recommendation from your supervisor, manager, partner/shareholder, or a judge you regularly practice before. With prior approval from the Leadership Class Management Committee, a letter of recommendation may be provided by an attorney not in one of these categories. To obtain approval for a letter of recommendation from someone other than the above, please contact Christi Lankford at clankford@sbotfam.org.

Alternatively, and in lieu of a letter of recommendation, an applicant may be nominated by a current member of the Family Law Council. Applicants who receive a nomination may also include a letter of recommendation, but the letter of recommendation is not required for those applicants who are nominated by a member of the Family Law Council. Please attach the nomination from a current member of the Family Law Council.
